Back to our team

James joined Markplan as a student intern in 2002 and graduated from Unitec with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) in 2006. Over more than two decades with the company, he has developed extensive experience delivering civil and structural engineering solutions across industrial, commercial, infrastructure, and residential projects.

A Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand (CMEngNZ), James specialises in structural and civil design, land development, stormwater infrastructure, retaining structures, bridge structures, construction observation, and project delivery. He has extensive experience designing in concrete, steel, and timber, and works across all phases of a project from feasibility and consenting through to detailed design and construction.

James manages key client relationships and regularly leads multidisciplinary teams involving architects, contractors, councils, and developers. He is recognised for his practical approach, strong technical capability, and commitment to delivering robust, buildable solutions that balance safety, quality, programme, and cost.

Having grown up around engineering and construction, James has always enjoyed the connection between design and building. This practical perspective was reinforced through the successful design and construction of his own family home, where he undertook the roles of designer, draughtsman, planner, engineer, quantity surveyor, project manager, and builder.

James is passionate about mentoring emerging engineers and contributing to the continued growth and success of both his colleagues and clients through practical, high-quality engineering solutions.
